Play Development & Maintenance

“Play is an essential part of every child's life and vital to their development. It is the way children explore the world around them and develop and practice skills. It is essential for physical, emotional and spiritual growth, for intellectual and educational development and for acquiring social and behavioural skills. Play is a generic term applied to a wide range of activities and behaviours that are satisfying to the child, creative to the child and freely chosen by the child" (Children’s Play Council).

In April 2015 Sentinel Leisure Trust was commissioned by WDC to undertake the strategic role of Play Development throughout Waveney. Sentinel audit WDC owned and overlapping  provision of play across the district and also the current budgets, resource and management of repair and maintenance of the play provision through Waveney Norse.

Lowestoft O-go-go

Lowestoft O-go-go is funded by Sport England through the Community Sport Activation Fund. This fund is a lottery funding programme, which builds on previous funding campaigns, that have shown that the key to success is finding out what people want from sport and what is stopping them from getting involved, before designing an offer that’s appealing, accessible and secures their long-term involvement.

An exciting partnership programme developed by Sentinel Leisure Trust, Suffolk County Council and Lowestoft Rising, is aiming to focus on the provision and engaging of individuals, aged 55+ men and women and young mothers, who are currently inactive and from the town of Lowestoft.

Our project will have three key delivery strands – taster sessions, activity programmes and signposting, with the ultimate aim of providing long term sustainable participation.

We aim to show individuals that sport and physical activity can be informal, fun and social and demonstrate how it can be incorporated into people’s everyday lives. We will offer support, choice and opportunity for regular ongoing participation. The innovative programme will take traditional and non-traditional activities to non-traditional venues to show that participation is open to everyone.
